The Hidden History of Lasgo’s “Something” & The Untold Story of Evi Goffin
While “Something” dominated global dance charts in the early 2000s, the history surrounding the iconic voice behind the track—Evi Goffin—is filled with music industry politics, a forced departure, and an eventual triumphant comeback.
Here are the deeper secrets behind the song’s production, Evi’s time in the band, and what really happened when she vanished from Lasgo at the height of their success.
1. The Cover-Up of Her Departure
In 2008, Lasgo’s management and producer Peter Luts announced to the media and on Belgian radio that Evi Goffin had chosen to leave the group permanently to focus on being a full-time mother.
This was a lie manufactured by management.
Years later, Evi revealed the truth: she had no intention of leaving Lasgo. While she was facing severe burnout and had recently given birth, her relationship with the group’s management had completely broken down over financial and contractual conflicts. Management essentially pushed her out, using her children as a convenient public excuse to cover up the behind-the-scenes drama.
2. Watching Her Own Replacement on TV
Instead of quietly hiring a new vocalist, Lasgo’s producers teamed up with the Belgian TV channel JIMtv to launch a highly publicized, Idols-style reality show to find “the new voice of Lasgo”. Evi had to endure the painful reality of watching her global success and identity turned into a television talent contest, which ultimately crowned Jelle Van Dael as her replacement.
3. “Something” Almost Didn’t Get Released
When the track was first completed, the group’s record label was highly reluctant to put it out. Executives believed that the Belgian club and vocal trance market was dying and that the song would perform poorly.
The track only blew up because local vinyl DJs took copies anyway, playing it constantly in clubs throughout early 2001. The radio demand became so massive that the label was forced to rush out a commercial CD release, launching the track straight into the UK Top 5 and the US Billboard Hot 100.
4. Her History as a “Ghost” Vocalist
Before Lasgo became a household name, Evi was already a prominent, often uncredited vocalist in the close-knit Belgian dance scene. She provided vocals for several other early Eurodance projects, recording under the alias Medusa (for the hit “Miss You”) and performing with popular Belgian acts like Fiocco and 2 Fabiola.
5. The Modern Comeback
After leaving Lasgo, Evi stepped completely away from the music industry for a long time, working as a television host for a gaming channel (Gunk TV) to escape the business.
However, after years of processing the burnout and her painful exit, she made a triumphant return to the stage. Today, she actively tours the world as a solo artist, headlining massive 90s and 2000s nostalgia festivals where she finally gets to perform “Something” live on her own terms.
